Hospital pharmacy

ZüriPharm AG is the hospital pharmacy for the University Hospital of Zurich (USZ) and the Cantonal Hospital of Winterthur (KSW). We also serve Forel Klinik AG and the SOMOSA model ward in Winterthur. The primary goal of hospital pharmacy is to contribute to the greatest possible treatment success for patients by optimizing all drug processes in the hospital in terms of effectiveness, appropriateness, cost-effectiveness, quality, and safety.

Drug supply and clinical pharmaceutical services

During our opening hours, we are available by phone and by email for technical inquiries. Outside of opening hours, our on-call pharmacist is available around the clock. Our 24-hour service not only guarantees expert advice in emergencies, but also a continuous supply of medicines. In the event of supply shortages, we work closely with customers to ensure suitable replacement products.

We compile and publish comprehensive technical information on non-approved medicines, as well as lists, tables, and other documents on medicine selection and use. This information is accessible to all USZ and KSW employees and is updated regularly.

Our pharmaceutical advice is tailored to individual patients as part of interprofessional visits. We are also part of Antidota and thus active in the Swiss antivenom depot network.

Responsibility in the interprofessional network

  • Guidelines for nursing on medication management on wards (which are audited annually)
  • Risk-based measures to optimize drug therapy and increase patient safety
  • Evaluation and introduction of care solutions
  • Closed Loop Medication Management (CLMM)

Education and training

In addition, we organize the Info-Disk, a continuing education program for pharmacists recognized by the FPH, which takes place about eight times a year. Together with partners, we also co-organize the Clinical Pharmacy Colloquium, which is held four times a year.

As a recognized training center, we fully support training for the Certificate of Competence in Clinical Pharmacy (FPH) within our institution. In addition, we supervise Master’s thesis for students in the Master’s program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at ETH Zurich, are a training center for assistantships in hospital pharmacies, and offer internships.

Public pharmacy

Purchase of medication

Patients with a valid prescription can obtain their medication directly from ZüriPharm AG at Spöndlistrasse 9. Medication is dispensed conveniently and personally at our counter.

Individual care thanks to close cooperation with the USZ

Take advantage of our close cooperation with the University Hospital of Zurich: for example, we manufacture our own products developed specifically for the USZ in our in-house production facilities. In addition, ZüriPharm AG has an extensive stock of medicines that are usually not available in public pharmacies, such as drugs for the treatment of rare infectious diseases.

Optimal care thanks to modern infrastructure

Our advanced IT system enables simple and secure management of your health insurance details. At the same time, we check all prescribed medications for possible interactions and bill most health insurance companies and insurers directly.

Billing and payment options

A few health insurance companies do not offer direct billing. In these cases, you will receive a receipted prescription upon cash payment to submit to your insurance company. For higher amounts, our billing company OFAC will take care of the invoicing: you will receive an invoice with a copy to forward to your health insurance company after payment has been received.

Please note that certain medications are only reimbursed under certain conditions or exclusively with supplementary insurance—some are not covered by health insurance companies at all. In such cases, you have the option of either paying the costs in cash or having an invoice issued by our billing office.

To ensure quick and smooth processing, please bring the following with you

  • A valid prescription from a USZ polyclinic or a discharge prescription from the USZ
  • Proof of your health or accident insurance (receipts, ID cards, certificates)
  • If applicable, a letter of guarantee from your health insurance company

Payment options

We accept EC cards, PostCards, and the convenient Twint app for direct payment of your medications.
